Today, Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, FCIArb (UK), FCIMC, Life Bencher, joins the global community in celebrating World Intellectual Property Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the pivotal role that intellectual property (IP) plays in driving innovation, creativity, and economic growth.
As a seasoned advocate for legal excellence and innovation, Aare Akinboro emphasizes the significance of Intellectual Property rights in shaping the future of industries, protecting creators, and fostering societal advancement.
Reflecting on the importance of this year’s celebration, Aare Akinboro stated:
“Intellectual Property is the lifeblood of innovation. It is through the protection and encouragement of new ideas that societies move forward, economies thrive, and cultures blossom. On this World IP Day, we must recommit ourselves to building robust frameworks that defend the rights of creators while promoting a fair and competitive environment for all.”
In a world increasingly driven by technology, art, science, and entrepreneurship, Akinboro stresses that protecting intellectual property is not just a legal necessity — it is a moral imperative. Without proper recognition and safeguarding of original works, creativity could be stifled, and progress hindered.
He further remarked:
“Whether it is the startup founder, the artist, the scientist, or the local innovator, their rights must be honored and protected. Intellectual Property Law is the shield that guards the imagination of our people and the spark that lights the torch of human advancement.”
Aare Akinboro, whose legal career spans decades of advocacy and reform, also called for greater awareness and education around Intellectual Property rights, particularly among young innovators, creators, and entrepreneurs across Nigeria and Africa.
He challenged stakeholders — lawyers, policymakers, academics, and businesses — to ensure that IP laws remain dynamic and adaptive to the challenges of a rapidly evolving world, especially in areas like digital innovation, biotechnology, creative industries, and artificial intelligence.
In a message of encouragement to creators, he concluded:
“To every innovator, dreamer, and creator: your ideas matter. Your creativity is a gift to humanity. Let us all work together to ensure that your contributions are respected, protected, and celebrated.”
As Nigeria and the global community mark this important day, Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, remains a passionate voice advocating for a future where innovation is honored, creativity is protected, and intellectual property rights are a cornerstone of sustainable development.
